A 40-year-old California man died in a possible hit-and-run accident near the Blue Moon Grille Friday night.

At 10:30 p.m., David McCann of Oceanside, Calif., was eastbound on Montana 40 on a motorcycle when he collided with a car attempting to turn left from U.S. 2 on to U.S. 2 where in intersects with Montana 40. The car failed to yield the right of way to McCann.

He died on the scene.

"He had his helmet on, but it didn't do any good," said Trooper Erick Fetterhoff of the Montana Highway Patrol.

According to reports, the car headed south on U.S. 2. About 50 minutes later, the passenger in the car called the Flathead County Sheriff's Office to find out how the motorcyclist was doing. He told dispatch the driver's name; dispatchers could hear him talking with another man in the background about not giving out too much information.

Montana Highway Patrol caught up with driver, Terry Miller, around 2:30 a.m. He was arrested for failure to remain at the scene of an accident. More charges are pending with the county attorney.

Alcohol was a contributing factor, Fetterhoff said.
