St. Mary in flood warning

| August 17, 2006 1:00 AM

A flash-flood warning Wednesday caused Glacier National Park employees to be evacuated from St. Mary and closed Loop A of the St. Mary campground.

The National Weather Service issued the warning for the Red Eagle burn area, including the town of St. Mary. The warning means that flooding or mud and debris flows are either imminent or occurring.

Melissa Wilson at Glacier National Park headquarters said the National Weather Service recorded .85 inches of rain between 9 a.m. and about 7 p.m. Wednesday. More rainfall was expected Wednesday night, with intense precipitation expected between 10 and midnight.

Walter Kuchansky, manager of St. Mary Lodge, said the lodge was full Wednesday night, but not Divide Creek banks.
