An orientation meeting for anyone interested in volunteering at the Humane Society of Northwest Montana gets under way at 10:30 a.m. today at the Adoption Center, 3499 U.S. 93 N., in Kalispell.

Those who want to work hands-on with the animals also are required to attend another training session at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22. Call 752-PAWS (7297).

Woodturners' skills on display at mall

The Glacier Woodturners will demonstrate the craft of turning wood on a lathe to create useful and decorative bowls, boxes and candlesticks today at the Kalispell Center Mall.

Information and loan of tools will be available to those interested in learning this skill.

Project Linus sponsors open house

The local chapter of Project Linus, a national nonprofit organization, hosts an open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today for those interested in making blankets for ill and traumatized children, at the Center for Real Estate, 264 Main St., Suites 201 and 202, at U.S 93 and U.S. 2 in Kalispell.

Everyone is welcome to come and learn more. Donations of new, handmade blankets for babies, children and teens also are welcome as part of National Blanket Day. Call Lauralee Scott at 854-9999.

Buddhist center hosts feast for peace

Kalinga Buddhist Center has its sixth annual "Feast of Great Bliss"- a Valentine's Day celebration for world peace - from 6:30 to 9 p.m. today at the Glacier Unitarian Universalist Church, 1515 Trumble Creek Road, in Kalispell.

The fundraiser features a five course gourmet Moroccan dinner, silent auction and raffle. Live music will feature local guitarist Steve Eckels.

The price is $25 a person or $45 a couple. Seating is limited. Remaining tickets will be sold on a first-come basis at the door. Call 756-8690 to check for seat availability.

Big Mountain holds wine festival today

Go to the Big Mountain Winter Winefest from 5 to 8 p.m. today, a fundraiser for the SNOW bus, which provides free rides to more than 40,000 Big Mountain people every year. More than 100 wines, a silent auction, live music and light appetizers will be featured. Tickets are $40 and will be available at the door.
