Workshop on tax districts scheduled

Given Flathead County's limited finances, several neighborhood groups reportedly have expressed interest in forming special improvement districts to pay for road and infrastructure projects.
These groups, as well as anyone else in the public, will have the opportunity to learn more about how these improvement districts work during a workshop Thursday.
Missoula attorney Mae Nan Ellingson, the state's bond counsel, will conduct the workshop, as well as a second session earlier in the day for county officials.
Special improvement districts offer neighborhoods an opportunity to tax themselves to pay for public improvements such as road paving and upgrades or sewer and water systems.
Thursday's workshop is expected to address a variety of issues, including how the cost of these improvements is allocated among the district property owners.
The meeting takes place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the second-floor conference room of the Earl Bennett Building.
