Flathead swimmers win girls, combined titles at duals

MISSOULA - Flathead topped the standings in combined score and girls action at the Missoula Duals swim meet on Saturday.
The Flathead girls totaled 624 points to finish 289 points ahead of Missoula Sentinel.
Flathead, boys and girls, posted a combined score of 972 to finish well ahead of Sentinel, Missoula Hellgate and Missoula Big Sky.
Hellgate won the boys team title, 418, with Sentinel second, 379, and Flathead third, 348.
The Bravettes took firsts in four of the 11 events held, winning the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays. The Flathead B team finished second in the 400 freestyle relay.
Jacey Stahlberg, 200 free (2:08.65), and Jenna Thiel, 200 IM (2:30.34), were individual winners for the Bravettes.
Thiel was also second in the 50 and 100 freestyle while Stahlberg was the runner-up in the 100 butterfly.
Also placing second was Sammie Hammet in the 200 IM.
Flathead took second place in the 200 freestyle.
The Bravettes placed in all events.
The Flathead's boys secured one first, winning the 400 freestyle relay.
Dan Browne and Brian Brady had the other top finishes. Brady was second in the 50 freestyle and Browne second in the 200 freestyle.
"Our practices look really sharp," said FHS coach Paul Stelter.
"I've never seen a group practice this well. That maybe a reason we're swimming so flat right now. We have no speed (for meets) because they are giving everything in practice."
Still, some FHS swimmers turned in some strong times. Bryce Fischer broke 25 seconds in the 50 freestyle and Brady's third-place 100 backstroke time was a PB (personal best).
"Not an event he usually swims," said Stelter of Brady.
Stahlberg's freestyle time was a PB.
"It's not an event she swims very well, but she did very well in it," said Stelter.
Also posting top times were Ali Siebert in the 100 butterfly, Heidi Windauer and Natalie Alsup, both in the 100 breaststroke, and Lauren Fox in the 500 freestyle.
Flathead is idle this weekend, but returns to Missoula for an invitational outing Jan. 21.
