Karl Melvin Kirkeby, 81, formerly of Kalispell, passed away of a heart attack Aug. 4, 2005, at his home in Mesa, Ariz.

He was born Jan. 1, 1924, in Flaxville to Ole and Hazel Kirkeby. His family moved to Kalispell, where Karl graduated with the Class of '42 at Flathead County High School, starring in football and basketball.

After high school, Karl served his country in the U.S. Navy, achieving the rank of boatswain's mate, second class, and was honorably discharged after four years. He received numerous medals and commendations, including two stars, a good conduct medal, and recognition for his participation in the Asia-Pacific campaign in World War II.

He then returned to Montana and married Patricia Anne McConnell on June 15, 1950. Together they owned and worked the family farm in Flaxville. In 2005, the couple celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary.

Karl and Patty began wintering in Arizona about 20 years ago. After full retirement, they moved to Mesa permanently.

He enjoyed golf and was a life member of the Elks Club. Reaching back to his days as a high-school athlete, Karl was a big sports fan and enjoyed taking in games on television.

Karl is survived by his wife, Patty; sister, Lois; brothers, Manley and Otis; Patty's sisters, Reta and Ruth; 25 nieces and nephews; and a large extended family.

A memorial service was held Aug. 13 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Mesa.
