A Kalispell couple

| January 21, 2006 1:00 AM

A Kalispell couple tried in vain to save a dog after the Pomeranian had been hit by a car on U.S. 2 near Checker Auto, and was lying in traffic. Jessica Blankenship said she and Jeff Baker believed the dog was dead and were startled to find it breathing after they scooped it up. Hoping to save its life, they called the veterinarian named on the dog's collar tag. The paging service for the clinic wouldn't call a doctor because the couple didn't own the dog. So they took it to their own veterinarian, who tried in vain to save the animal. They agreed to pay for the medical care, even though the dog didn't survive. Animal warden Mike Hall said "no one else would stop" for the injured dog. "They are very humane people."

A 19-year-old man was charged with assault and possession of alcohol near Elrod School. There was a report of a woman screaming at Motel 6. Later, a couple was charged with disorderly conduct and obstructing an officer there.

A man in the parking lot of Home Depot aroused suspicions Thursday night when he decided to sleep off the effects of earlier evening activities. At Four Corners, an ambulance was called for an unresponsive male at about 4 a.m. It turned out to be a very sleepy clerk.

A report of internal theft from a business is under investigation.

Officers weren't able to find the white Subaru Legacy near the high school that reportedly contained four males and a bong.

On Glacier Street, a woman reported a man going through property on her front porch. Officers found it was a meter reader at work.
