Designers, artists and doodlers are challenged to let their talents shine and do good turns for affordable housing at the same time.

Flathead Valley Habitat for Humanity is sponsoring a T-shirt contest commemorating the "Columbia Falls 4th Street Build." It's open to all "kids," regardless of age.

The "4th Street Build" is a six-home development, the largest single project undertaken by Flathead Valley Habitat for Humanity.

Working with land at the north end of Fourth Street East donated by the city of Columbia Falls, Habitat is developing the six lots to provide decent, affordable housing for families in the Flathead. Streets, sewer and water went in this past spring, and the first two families have been chosen and are working alongside volunteers to build their homes.

To take note of the milestone, Habitat wants to print some snazzy shirts.

Contest organizers encourage the creatively minded to pick up their paints, crayons, markers and pens and come up with something to match the theme.

Designs must be no larger than 14-by-14 inches square, and they must be in color. The paintings, doodles and designs must be original to qualify. Include names, addresses, ages of entrants and phone numbers. Households can submit more than one design.

The deadline is July 26.

Mail entries to Flathead Valley Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 2836, Kalispell, MT 59903, or drop them off at the office, 120 Second St. E.

The winning design and artist's name will be printed on T-shirts distributed throughout the area.

Those interested in helping with the homes - groups will be on site every Saturday for the rest of the summer, and small crews have worked Wednesdays - should call volunteer coordinator Jackie Neumiller at 212-0800.

Habitat expects to finish the first two homes this fall.
