Working from both ends of the Big Drift, Glacier National Park plow crews have met each other on Going-to-the-Sun Road.

The wind-formed drift just east of Logan Pass was estimated to be 50 feet deep this year. The park's east-side and west-side crews met on Thursday and continued to clear snow from the road on Friday.

Before the road over the pass opens to motorists, there's still considerable work to be done, including clearing snow from around the Logan Pass Visitor Center and from parking areas at the pass. Falling rocks also caused considerable damage to a stretch of guardrails in the Triple Arches area.

Lower stretches of Sun Road remain open.

Hikers and bikers have exclusive access to the road beyond a gate at Avalanche Campground on the west side of the park.

On the east side, hikers and bikers can travel past a gate at Jackson Glacier Overlook.
