Whitefish boxers dominate smoker

This year, Whitefish rules.

At least in the ring.

Whitefish won seven of the 11 bouts at the annual Cat/Dog Smoker Monday night at Memorial Field in Whitefish.

The boxing event is a major fundraiser for the Glacier Twins American Legion baseball program. The Glacier Twins roster is comprised of players mainly from Columbia Falls and Whitefish. The fight card pits high school students from those two schools against each other.

The event drew more than 1,500 spectators.

In the main event, which was a rematch of last year's main event, Matt Krause of Whitefish won a split decision over Michael Hader of Columbia Falls. Both fighters checked in at 155 pounds.

Last year the two battled to a draw.

In the semi-main event, Kevin Kaltschmidt of Whitefish decisioned Jesse McCafferty of Columbia Falls in a 130-pound bout.

Whitefish's other winners on the night were: Fabio Luchsinger, Cody Mikesell, Jake Scheel, Jacob Prestegaard and Tim Lehner.

Posting wins for Columbia Falls were Clayton Paterson, Shane Jones, Matt Busich and Joshua Wilson.

"The fighters were pretty well prepared this year," said Bob Lockman, vice president of the Glacier Twins.

"The Hill brothers, all four, were involved. They worked with the kids for a couple weeks. They put on a pretty good show."

Lockman said the final tally this year was a reversal from the past three to four years when Columbia Falls has won, and quite handily, he added.

The Glacier Twins AA baseball team is in action tonight hosting Kootenai Valley Rangers A squad at 7.
