Rookie Mitchell wins compacts

Fans of short track racing got to see five divisions (limited sportsman, hobby stock, bombers, compacts and hornets) in action Saturday night during the Shad Burland Memorial Races at Montana Raceway Park.

The compacts were a bit more cautious after the carnage two weeks ago. Rookie Bill Mitchell had the fast time for the night with a 15.62-second run. Duane Tedrick, out for the first time this season, took the win in the trophy dash. The main went smooth with only one caution. Mitchell took his first win of the season over Russell Smyth and Tim Davis.

Dirk Meyer took home his first trophy of the season in the trophy dash of the hornet division, beating out Cody Evenson. Cory Kruse took home the win in the main over Meyer and Peter Aimsback.

Bill McCallum had the fast time in the bombers division and his best time ever at 16.72. It was a night of firsts for the McCallum family as Bill's son Chris Nelson, a rookie, took home his first trophy in the trophy dash. Don Denning took the checkered flag in both the heat and the main. The top three finishers in the main were Denning, Preston Kinninson and McCallum.

Jed Shue won his third race of the season in the hobby stock division. Dan Lewis took the wins in the trophy dash and the heat. Shue took the win in the main, Lewis and Pilsch were second and third.

In the limited sportsman division, Alex Lessor had fast time for the night with a 14.24 - though he wrestled with car problems for the rest of the night. Micah Sampson took home the trophy in the dash. In the main, Danny Morris checked out early and created a bit of space with the rest of the field, but a caution came out with some cars spinning out in the infiled to bunch them back up. Then when the checkered flag came out it was Morris, Sampson and rookie Zach Havens.

The fifth annual Legend Thunder race takes place Saturday with three divisions of legends running in the national qualifying event. Legend drivers from all across the country and Cananda will be running with the kids' class bandoleros.

The races will start Friday with legend practice from 10 a.m to 4 p.m. Spectators can come watch in the stands for free or enter into the pits for $10.00. The race kickoff party will be at the Rainbow Bar and Casino, starting at 5 p.m. The public is welcome to this event. Saturday the gates will open at 5 p.m. Qualifying starts at 6 p.m. and racing gets going at 7 p.m.
