Belva Jolene 'Jo' Brockel, 73
Belva Jolene Brockel, 73, "Jo" to her friends and family, passed way of natural causes, June 26, 2006, at her home in Whitefish.
She was born June 25, 1933, in Wapato, Wash., the daughter of John Robert and Earlene Olive Paul. The family moved to Whitefish where she lived most of her 73 wonderful years and always considered Whitefish home.
On Jan. 15, 1956, Jo married Lee Brockel and they worked together at Lincoln Cleaners, eventually purchasing the business in 1970. Together they successfully and relentlessly served the community until they retired in 2000.
Through the years Jo was active in many organizations in the community. She was involved for many years in bowling as a league bowler, league and association secretary, and held many bowling records for several years.
With husband Lee, she was committed to the Whitefish Volunteer Fire Department. Jo was a dedicated fireman's wife for 20 years. From making calls to serving coffee, to keeping the business running, as well as waiting up at all hours of the day or night to support her husband. There was, of course, her mandatory potato salad at the annual Fireman's Picnic.
Jo also participated in the Jaycees and the Whitefish Winter Carnival where she helped organize the original infamous Yetis. Jo was a Girl Scout leader, Sunday school teacher, and for many a surrogate mother/grandmother. In 1997 she was honored by being named First Lady of Whitefish.
With the birth of her grandsons, Joel and Kellen, Jo became a super sports booster. She could be seen at any of the sports the boys were playing; golf, soccer, football, baseball and basketball - Jo and Lee were named Fans of the Year, by Whitefish Bulldog Basketball in 1999. Many kids in Whitefish will always remember "Grandma Jo" for always having the bubble gum, sunflower seeds and the Powerade and she always supported her kids for their efforts, win or lose.
Jo was preceded in death by her father; four sisters, Nancy, Karen, Janet and Kay; and an infant son, John William Brockel.
She is survived at the family home by her loving husband of 50 years; her mother, Earlene; and sister, Kathy Paul, of Whitefish; daughters, Vickie and Teri and son-in-law, Conway Sunell, in Eugene, Ore.; grandsons, Joel and Kellon Barranger, in Portland; numerous nieces and nephews; and by many extended family members and friends.
Memorial services for Jo will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 30, at the Austin Funeral Home in Whitefish with Terry Abell and Bob DePratu officiating.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to the Whitefish Booster Club in care of Whitefish High School.
