4th of July golf play with a 68

Josh Gold of Kalispell shot a 68 on Thursday to take the first day lead in the 70th annual 4th of July golf tournament at Whitefish Lake Golf Club.

Jason Johnstone of Havre and John Moscrip of Issaquah, Wash., are two shots back.

Dave Eames of Billings is fourth, 71, while Rich Boswell of Calgary, Alberta, and Greg Newton of Whitefish are tied for fifth with 73s.

In women's play, Darah Newell of Helena and Kelly Gillum of Fort Collins, Colo., both shot 74 to share the opening day lead.

Whitefish's Jennifer Orcutt is seventh with a 77.

The tournament winds up Saturday.
