Hockaday announces spring class schedule for children

The Hockaday Museum of Art is offering a new series of children's classes that will provide concentrated and in-depth learning opportunities on clay, drawing and painting.

All classes are taught by the Hockaday's director of education, Kathy Martin.

The schedule of After School Art Classes for first- through fourth-grade students is:

Clay Creations - Tuesdays, March 21 through April 11, 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. Learn to make hand-built ceramic creations using low-fire clay. Projects for this class will include slab-made plaques, fancy pinch pots, clay creatures, and vases.

3-D Drawing - Tuesdays, April 18 through May 9, 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. Learn to draw three-dimensional boxes, buildings and other objects. A variety of drawing media (pencils, pens, markers) will be used in this class.

Drawing & Painting Nature - Tuesdays, May 16 through June 6, 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. Learn to draw and paint what you see. Using the current exhibits as inspiration, students will create pictures of flowers and plants, landscape paintings, and more.

The schedule of After-School Art Classes for fifth- through eighth-grade students is:

Creating With Clay - Wednesdays, March 22 through April 12, 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. Explore different ways to hand build with ceramic clay - pinch pots, coils, and slabs. Projects will include decorative coil pots, slab made boxes, and pinch pot whistles.

Perspective Drawing and Painting - Wednesdays, April 19 through May 10, 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. Practice the basics of three-dimensional drawing. Learn to use one-point and two-point perspective to create impressive drawings and watercolor paintings.

Drawing & Painting Nature - Wednesdays, May 17 through June 7, 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. Classes will focus on learning to draw and paint what you see. Using the current exhibits as our inspiration, students will create pictures of flowers and plants, landscape paintings, and more.

Students must register for all four classes on each topic. The cost for each series is $20 for non-members or $16 for museum family members and includes all supplies. Class size is limited to twelve and pre-paid registration guarantees your space.

The schedule of Home School Art Classes for elementary-aged students (grades 1 to 5) is:

Clay Creations - Wednesdays, March 22 through April 12, 10:30 a.m. to noon. Learn to make hand-built ceramic creations using low fire clay. Projects for this class will include slab made plaques, fancy pinch pots, clay creatures, and vases.

3-D Drawing - Wednesdays, April 19 through May 10, 10:30 a.m. to noon. Learn to draw three-dimensional boxes, buildings and other objects. A variety of drawing media (pencils, pens, markers) will be used in this class.

Drawing & Painting Nature - Wednesdays, May 17 through June 7, 10:30 a.m. to noon. Learn to draw and paint what you see. Using the current exhibits as inspiration, students will create pictures of flowers and plants, landscape paintings, and more.

Class size is limited to 12 and pre-paid registration guarantees your space. Older home school students are encouraged to attend the After School Art classes held on Wednesdays from 3:30 to 4:45 pm.

Additionally, Art Time provides hands-on art experiences and activities in the museum's Discovery Gallery for pre-school children accompanied by an adult guardian. Art Time will be held on Wednesdays, from 9:45 to 10:15 a.m., from March 22 through June 7. Registration is not required for Art Time, which is free for museum family members and $3 per child for non-members.
