Warming trend produces slides on Sun Road
The Daily Inter Lake
Warmer weather has produced some avalanche activity above Glacier National Park's Going-to-the-Sun Road.
A plow crew working east of Logan Pass went to work this week on an avalanche slide that crossed Sun Road in the Siyeh Bend area.
The crew had to cut through snow that was 30 feet deep. Temperatures reached highs in the 40s on upper elevations of Sun Road this week.
Early in the week, Glacier's plow crews were diverted to mandatory safety training, but work later resumed, with the west side crew advancing into the Haystack Creek area.
There they encountered snow depths of 30 feet.
West of the pass, hikers and bikers have exclusive access to Sun Road between Avalanche Campground and Crystal Point. East of the pass, hikers and bikers can travel only up to a gate at the Jackson Glacier Overlook.
Elsewhere in the park, Camas Road is now open to vehicles.
