Newgard takes singles title in tennis invitational

Flathead's Sara Newgard swept through the girls singles bracket during the Flathead Invitational tennis tournament on Saturday to claim the individual crown.

Newgard defeated Sentinel's Kirsten Marne 10-8 in the final.

Three Bravettes made it into the singles semifinals: Newgard, Izzy Makman and Elli Brown. Newgard beat Brown, 10-3, and Makman fell to Marne, 10-7.

"Overall, we did very well," Flathead coach Buck Measure said. "It was a good tournament, especially for our girls singles."

The Braves and Bravettes made their presence known by advancing at least one player to every semifinal match.

Flathead's doubles team of Alix Dixon and Hannah Hanes made a strong run at the title as well. The pair rolled through their bracket before falling to Sentinel in the finals, 6-2, 6-4.

"Today they approached their first game a little differently than before," Measure said. "They came out mentally ready with a positive attitude and played one point at a time. It paid off."

Flathead hosted the three Missoula schools for the annual tournament. Sentinel had a strong day in every bracket by fielding a player in every final.

Sentinel's Nick Shull beat teammate Phil Ehrlich, 6-4, 6-4, for the singles crown. Shull beat three higher-seeded athletes on his way to the title.

Tennis teams across the state are gearing up for divisionals and then the state tournament. The Flathead Invitational proved that Sentinel is poised for a strong finish, and Flathead is swinging strong the final week of the regular season.

"Both teams are picking up the pace," Measure said. "I think they'll be ready for divisionals. This should boost their confidence. They haven't had as many wins this season as they wanted."

The AA divisional tournament begins at Flathead on Thursday at 1 p.m. and runs through Friday.
