Pirates, Dogs battling for titles

The rain forced tennis matches indoors on Friday as play continued during the Northwestern A divisionals.

Polson's girls lead the team standings at 28 points, just one more than Whitefish. Bigfork, Columbia Falls and Libby complete the list, respectively. The Pirates and the Bulldogs each have two girls still in play in the singles, but Whitefish has three doubles teams still alive compared to Polson's two.

The team titles may come down to who wins the individual titles as Whitefish's Danni Paulson and Polson's Jen Orchard roll toward their expected showdown in the final. Earlier in the year, Paulson - the defending state champ - defeated Orchard, 6-0, 6-0.

On the boys side, Whitefish leads the two-horse race by three with 30. Polson is right behind with 27. Bigfork (13), Libby (11) and Columbia Falls (7) are well behind.

The Bulldogs have two singles and two doubles in the semifinals compared with two singles and one doubles pair for the Pirates.

Whitefish's Matt Harris, seeded No. 2 for the tournament, had another strong day of play and will try to get by Polson's Derrick Roberts to earn a berth to the championship match. His teammate, Ian Hosek, faces Polson's Andy Dykstra in the other semifinal.

Dykstra and Harris are expected to meet in the finals.

"I'm playing relatively well," Harris said after his 10-3 victory over C-Falls' Grant Getts. "I'm really nervous about playing Andy. I'm anxious for a rematch."

Dykstra beat Harris earlier in the season.

Play begins today at 8:15 at the FVCC courts.
