Flathead boys 2nd in divisional track

BUTTE - Make that six straight.

The Flathead High School girls track team celebrated another Western AA divisional track and field championship on Saturday.

The Bravettes, who came into the competition heavy favorites and winners of this event the five previous years, did not disappoint by nearly doubling the score on runner-up Butte.

The FHS girls finished the two-day meet with 185 points. Butte followed with 94.

"We had a perfect day," said FHS coach Jerry Boschee.

"Our kids got up this morning and they were ready. Our goal was to double our point total (from Friday) and we more than did that."

Flathead led after Friday's competition with 69 points.

The Bravettes were paced on the final day by event winners Elizabeth Myers, 100 (12.56); Chelsea Hart, 100 hurdles (15.77); and Ally Krautbauer, high jump (5-0).

Myers also placed second in the 200 and the triple jump and added a third place in the 100 hurdles. She won the 300 hurdles on Friday.

Jenae Lister placed second in the 400, Kelsie Norwood was second in the high jump and Rebecca Johnson was the runner-up in the discus.

The Bravettes' 1,600 relay team also took a second.

The FHS girls scored in all nine events held Saturday. They had three placers in three events - 100, 100 hurdles and triple jump - and finished 2-3-4-6 in the 200.

"Our depth won it," said Boschee.

"Our kids were mentally prepared. They were not going to be denied. It was pretty amazing how focused they were."

All total, the Bravettes qualified 17 athletes in 14 events for the state track meet, which begins Friday in Helena.

The Flathead boys, surprising divisional winners a year ago, had to settle for second best this time around.

The Braves had one first on Saturday - the 400 relay team of Garrett Smith, Sean Clark, John Fairweather and Reed Watkins - in falling short of Helena Capital, 119-116 2/3. They were timed in 3:24.94.

Fairweather also placed second in the 1,600 and Beau Watkins was the runner-up in the 200 and placed third in the 100.

"In a whole meet like this, all it takes is some place along the line where we finish one place ahead of a Capital kid and it gives us two points and takes two away from them," said FHS boys coach Dan Hodge of how close it was.

"That's all."

Still, it was a successful weekend for the Braves. They will have 16 athletes competing in 14 events at the state meet .

"Capital, they were steady," said Hodge.

"We didn't do real well in a couple of events. That cost us. That happens sometimes in a track meet.

"We got enough kids to go to state next week to maybe make an impact."

Hodge said the relay team set a season best time by three seconds. He also said Beau Watkins ran well in the sprints.

Nine events were held on the final day and the Braves scored in seven.
