Flathead girls second, boys third in AA track

The Daily Inter Lake

HELENA - Flathead's Sean Clark and Dan Ogden were event winners Friday during first-day action at the Class AA state track and field meet at Vigilante Stadium.

Clark won the 800 with a personal-best time of 1:56.49 while Ogden had a personal best in the shot put with a distance of 57-1.

Ogden, who came in with a 54-3 1/2 best effort, won state by five feet.

"He had five throws that would have won the competition," said Flathead boys coach Dan Hodge of Ogden.

"His third throw (was his best)."

Hodge said Ogden's winning distance will rank him either third or fourth in school history.

Clark's previous best time in the 800 was 1:57.2.

"Sean led from start to finish," said Hodge.

"He really had to push it the last 100 meters."

The Flathead boys are sitting third in the team standings with 35 points. Billings West leads with 66 and Helena Capital is second with 46.

"We placed in all of our events today that we competed in except for one," said Hodge.

"That was the 400 relay. We blew a handoff for the first time in 4-5 years."

Coming in, the relay team had the fourth best time. They were leading Friday after the first two handoffs.

Flathead's other top finishes were turned in by Seth Grossman and Carl Nystuen, who placed third and fourth, respectively, in the 3,200.

The Flathead girls had no individual winners, but still managed to pile up the second most point total with 41. Billings West leads the standings with 59.

The Bravettes had two individual runners-up in Elizabeth Myers, 300 hurdles; and Ally Krautbauer, high jump.

Her time, 45.21, was a personal best

The Bravettes' 400 relay team also finished second. Running on that were Chelsea Hart, Jenae Lister, Kendalyn Habel and Myers.

Hart also placed third in the 300 hurdles.

Her time, 45.96, was a personal best.

The FHS girls are defending state champions.

"I think we had probably as good a performance as we could have," said Flathead girls coach Jerry Boschee.

"We have a couple kids that were disappointed in what they did, but overall, the coaches are really happy with what they saw."
