Tale of fugitive pilot to be told on TV show tonight
The tale of former fugitive Jaroslaw "Jerry" Ambrozuk will be told on the Fox network program "America's Most Wanted" tonight.
Titled "You can run, but you can't hide," the show will describe Ambrozuk's 24 years on the lam after his girlfriend drowned in a plane that Ambrozuk flew into Bitterroot Lake west of Kalispell.
The Canadian teenage couple was headed to Vancouver, British Columbia, in an airplane Ambrozuk had rented. Ambrozuk later told a friend that they had planned to disappear.
Dianne Babcock was still strapped inside the airplane when it was pulled out of the lake.
Ambrozuk never contacted authorities. Instead, he went on the run, briefly to New York and then to Texas, where he changed his name and eventually started a successful business.
He reportedly told a woman his true identity and the story about Babcock. This summer, she contacted Flathead County Sheriff Jim Dupont, who said there was still a warrant for Ambrozuk's arrest for negligent homicide.
Texas authorities found and arrested Ambrozuk, who is scheduled to stand trial in Flathead County next spring.
"America's Most Wanted" previously aired two stories on Ambrozuk.
Tonight's program will tell about Ambrozuk's capture. It begins at 8 p.m.
