Whitefish golfers rule state titles

Boys win 3rd straight title while girls triumph; Krause medals in boys play, Ray 2nd for girls
BUTTE - It was all Whitefish on Friday at the Class A state golf tournament at the Butte Country Club.
The Bulldogs won both team titles, had a medalist in Sam Krause and a runner-up in Chelsea Ray.
"I'm really thrilled for the boys," said WHS veteran coach Terry Nelson. "That's three-in-a-row."
Nelson was equally excited over the success of his girls.
"The girls had their best round of the year today," Nelson said.
"They shoot a 353. I'm really happy for them."
The state championship for the WHS girls was the 13th under Nelson. For the boys, it was No. 7.
The last time both the boys and girls won state together was 1990.
"Everything has to fall together at the right time for you (to do that)," Nelson said.
Krause took top honors with a two-day total of 137. He finished 3-under par.
Jim Mee of Libby wound up second, four shots back.
Krause opened with a 67 on Thursday while Mee shot a 68.
On the final day, Mee and Krause were tied after the par-4 13th hole.
"On the next hole, a par 5, Mee hits a beautiful drive down the left side, which you have to do (on that hole)," Nelson said.
"Sam hooks his tee shot over the creek. It ends up under a tree."
Nelson said Krause used a 3-iron to fashion a shot under the trees, back over the creek and over the bushes."
"About 90 yards," Nelson said.
"He gets on the green, gets his birdie. Jim took par. That was a turning point for what could have been a disastrous hole for Sam. It was awesome (how he held it together)."
The WHS boys had two more top-10 players in Zac Wooten, tied for sixth (76-74-150), and Derek Denning, 10th, (74-78-152).
Whitefish had a 595 total, easily besting Havre, 638. Libby finished third, 639, and Eureka seventh, 659.
Ronan's William Foust was fifth, 75-74-149; Grady Grayson of Eureka ninth, 76-75-151; and Bigfork's Travis Boughton was 11th, 80-73-153.
Ray, two-shots back and in third place after Thursday's action, fell one-shot short of catching Ali Ward of Havre, 82-78-160.
"Shot 78 today, a great round," Nelson said of Ray.
The WHS girls finished with three players in the top 10. Quinn Micklewright was eighth (93-84-177) and Breanna Cameron 10th (92-91-183).
"A very good showing for a girls team with no seniors," Nelson.
"They are all back next year."
Whitefish, with a 723 total, also won with plenty of room to spare. Havre finished second, 741, Ronan fourth, 768, and defending state champ Polson sixth, 801.
