Smoldering campfire turns explosive

| October 15, 2006 1:00 AM

An explosion was reported a little before 8 p.m. Friday, but all the Smith Valley Fire Department found was a campfire on U.S. 2 West. A few hours later, the Flathead Valley Sheriff's Department received more phone calls from the same area; this time the explosion shook houses and knocked pictures off walls. The boom was reportedly from homemade rockets lit in the fire.

Someone pried open the back window to relieve a vehicle of the fly rod and case inside. A Hungry Horse man says he knows the guy who broke into his house and stole his gun and chain saw.

There was something suspicious about the UPS-delivered bag - it was his Cougar Trail address, all right, but that wasn't his name, and the house across the street received an identical package. Worried by the strange circumstances and the residue on the outside of the package, the man who received it asked deputies and a drug dog to check it out.

The alcohol enforcement team broke up a underage party in Hungry Horse Friday night.
