FVCC courses span writing to blood drawing

Flathead Valley Community College initiates a new semester with a range of noncredit classes from novel writing to phlebotomy (blood drawing).

Whitefish writer Dennis Foley offers a class on writing a first novel from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays from Sept. 11 to Nov. 13. For an enrollment fee of $79, students will learn about plot, structure, point of view, sense of place and voice.

A former Hollywood screenwriter and producer, Foley has published many novels. He is a nationally recognized writing instructor.

Students looking for a new career can find one through a 40-hour course that provides training to become a board-certified phlebotomy technician. The course presents blood drawing training, safety procedures, basic anatomy and physiology and more,

Training includes 120 hours of practical experience.

The college also offers training for new recreational interests with "Monday Night Football for Dummies." Learn to distinguish a tight end from a defensive end and a screen pass from a draw play for a fee of $44. The class meets from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays from Sept. 11 to Oct. 9.

Also offered is a four-part series called "Views of the Flathead" from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays from Sept. 13 to Oct. 4 for a fee of $39.

Local experts involved in the course include George Ostrom, Bill Schustrom, John Chase and Lex Blood.
