Hockaday offers holiday art classes

The Hockaday Museum of Art in Kalispell offers holiday-themed art classes for children and adults in September and October.

On Sat., Sept. 30, ages 6 to 14 will make holiday cards from 10 a.m. to noon. Create a picture or design suitable for reproduction on note cards for the holidays or other occasion. Students will be coached in design basics and the creation of a finished piece.

Each student will be encouraged to create a design or picture to enter in the Hockaday Museum of Art Card Design Contest. The cost is $4 for students with family memberships and $5 for nonmembers.

Another class gives those ages 15 and over the chance to make stained-glass sun catchers for the holidays. The class is Oct. 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Students with little or no experience will learn basic techniques for glass-cutting, copper-foiling and soldering in this one-day introduction to stained glass.

Each participant will complete a project, using a selection from the instructor's collection of sun-catcher patterns and art glass. Class size is limited to five and students must bring protective eyewear.

Cost is $40 for those with family memberships; $45 for nonmembers. The cost includes tool use and materials.

On Oct. 28, ages 17 and over are invited to paint a plate for a gift or decoration. From 1 to 3 p.m., students will receive instruction and tips from the Hockaday art education staff. The class fee is $5; a materials fee, which includes glazes and firing is $12 for salad plates and $15 for dinner plates.

Other Hockaday classes:

"Clay Explorations," after-school art classes, grades 1 through 4, Tuesdays from Oct. 3-24, 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. Students will discover the versatility of clay when they make plaques, boxes, bowls and sculptures. Some will be glazed and others decorated with paint. Family memberships $20, Non-members $25.

"Oil Painting - Colors and Patterns" after-school art classes, grades 5 through 8, Wednesdays from Oct. 11-Nov. 1, 3:30 to 4:45 p.m.; Travel back in time to meet Matisse and other Fauve painters of the early 1900s. Easels, oil paints and brushes included. Family memberships $16, non-members $20.
