Catt sets shot mark at C-Falls Invitational

COLUMBIA FALLS - Columbia Falls throw coach Jessica Falcon was working the discus Saturday afternoon at the Columbia Falls Invitational track meet when senior shot/discus thrower Keith Catt ambled up to talk about his performance in the shot put.

"'Broke the school record,'" he informed her. "Got one more throw.'"

And he was gone.

Catt didn't just break the Columbia Falls school record - he shattered it.

His winning throw of 54-2 blasted the old mark of 51-10.

Catt also won the discus (141-1/2).

"It was just a good day, a good week of practice," he said with a shrug.

The record-setting shot "just felt really easy," he said. "It didn't feel like it went as far as it did."

That was because there wasn't a lot of power behind the put, he explained. "It was all technique. It's nice (to set the record) at home."

"That's impressive," Columbia Falls head coach Jamie Heinz said of Catt's throw. "That's pretty neat, having Keith break a school record."

"I think (Catt) has a great chance of winning state in both discus and shot," Falcon said.

"He just needs to get a little more separation for his discus and for his shot he needs to open up more. That's his biggest thing," she added.

But to begin the season with a new school mark "is a great way to start. It's a great mindset," she added.

Teamwise, the day belonged to Polson. The Pirate boys scored 100.33 points to best the host Wildcats, who scored 88.33.

On the girls side, it was a bit of a runway with Polson scoring 153. Second place Columbia Falls scored 96.

Another local boy getting his season off to an impressive start is Libby's Porter Nelson.

The senior went 13-0.

"I'm starting off where I ended the season last year," he said. "That was my goal - and then just move up every week.

"I'm happy with my performance. It was a not so nice day (weather wise)."

That also proved the money his dad spent sending him to a California pole vault camp may have been well spent.

"(The camp) was great," he said. "It's not just your average camp. It's very creative with technique and drills," he added.

Other locals who won multiple events were Polson's Marilee Mowbray in the 200 (27.44) and 400 (1:02.72) and Polson's Christa Redcrow in 100 hurdles (17.63) and long jump (16-1).

As for the meet itself?

Other than the rainy weather?

"I thought the meet went well," Heinz said. "It was nice to have the number of teams there - start the year with that type of competition. It allows all the kids to get a feel for track. The kids can use it as a great measuring stick for what they need to do for the rest of the season.

"Everything seemed to go very well, especially with all the help from all the schools," he added.

As for the Wildcats and Wildkats, "I was very pleased with both our boys and girls teams," he said.

"We came to compete and all in all, I was very happy with the performance. Having Kyle Jangula get first in long and triple is a good way for him to start the year," he added.

Heinz also complimented Jessica Boyer on winning both her running events (800 and 1,600).

"I'm very excited for her. That kind of goes with her goal of breaking the school records," he said.

Her times were off school record pace, but "she'll be on mark to get that by the end of the year, I think," he added.
