Bravettes split with Capital

FHS loses first game, but regroups to claim nightcap

HELENA - At least the day ended on a good note for the Flathead High School softball team.

The Bravettes, blasted by Helena Capital 15-5 in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday, regrouped in time to claim the Western AA nightcap 12-3.

"We got our butts kicked (in the first game)," said Flathead coach Dale Beerman.

"We didn't hit the ball real well."

That changed in the second game.

The Bravettes registered 10 hits and rolled behind five-run innings in the fifth and seventh. The other two runs came in the sixth.

"We responded real well," Beerman said.

"They had us 3-0 going into the fifth (inning)."

Kalin Lingle, Christina Zorn and Becca Felde all doubled in the fifth. The Bravettes registered five hits in the inning.

Catcher Julie Robertson led FHS hitters in the contest, going 3-for-4.

In the warm-ups before the opener, Bravettes pitcher Brianna Compton was hit in the side of the head with a softball thrown by Robertson.

Robertson was making a practice throw to second.

"Went to her knees," Beerman said of Compton, after she was hit by the ball.

"We went out there to see if she was OK. Then she got up and pitched the rest of the game.

"She's one tough girl," Beerman said.

Beerman said an athletic trainer monitored Compton's condition throughout the game.

"The trainer kept coming over and checking her, giving us reports," Beerman said. "After the game she had a headache, a slight concussion."

Beerman said Courtney Sverdrup "pitched really well in the second game." She checked Capital on six hits - five singles and one double.

Capital had 13 hits in the first game. Sverdrop had two of Flathead's six hits in that game.

Flathead, 2-1 overall and in league play, plays at Missoula Big Sky on Thursday, 5 p.m., and hosts Butte on Saturday for a doubleheader, noon and 2 p.m.
