Gunlikson wins two events at Flathead B Invitational

She just needed a little bit less to do.

Usually Flathead's Samantha Gunlikson competes in the long jump, triple jump, the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and the 1,600 relay.

But at Tuesday's Flathead Class B Invitational, Bravette head coach Jerry Boschee gave the senior a different assignment.

He told her to compete in just the triple jump and the 300 hurdles - but to do them well.

The result? Gunlikson won both.

Her time in the 300 hurdles - 49.1 - was a personal best.

"The weather was perfect, a little wind on the hurdles, but I think I'm strong enough now. I can power through it," Gunlikson said.

"I felt strong at the end.

"We've had some hard workouts, but I've recovered well and I was ready to go today," she said.

"She was a busy woman on Saturday," Boschee said of Gunlikson.

"She was all over the place. I don't think she sat down for more than five minutes."

"She's consistently getting better," he added.

As for the rest of the Bravettes?

"Overall, pretty happy," Boschee said.

"The kids that went to Great Falls were not real happy with their performances there. They kind of came back and refocused and got the job done," he said.

The athletes who weren't able to compete last weekend were more than ready to go, he said.

"They came out and performed well, too.

He complimented the efforts of Nicole Hall, winner of the 100 and 200, Kelly Niebaum, 1,600 winner, javelin winner Ali Christianson in the javelin and high jump victor Katie Zimmerman.

On the boys side, coach Dan Hodge also liked a lot of what he saw Tuesday.

"It was a relaxing meet," he said.

Flathead skipped the annual Top 10 meet in Missoula again this year in favor of its own invitational

"I don't want to take my kids to another stress meet. I don't want one this soon," Hodge said.

"We stay at home and let our kids relax. We used today as a work meet," he said.

Ian Damon posted his best time of the year to win the 100.

"He's a sophomore, so it's nice to have someone like that coming on," Hodge said.

He complimented Richie Carter's 13-foot performance in the pole vault, Dan Ogden's wins in shot and discus.

Hodge also took note of Clint Manning's winning 300 hurdle time of 42:04 and Beau Gravelle's second place time of 42.12.

"That's a nice run for those two."

Next up for Flathead is Thursday Missoula triangular with Hellgate and Sentinel.
