Lilly stays on top in senior golf

The Daily Inter Lake

Two rounds down and one to go.

Carroll Lilly, 57, of Whitefish stayed atop the leaderboard for a second straight day Wednesday at the 52nd Annual State Senior Golf Championship Tournament.

Lilly turned in another sub-70 round, firing a 4-under par 66 over the 5,208-yard layout at Village Greens Golf Course. He leads Dave Morberg of Whitefish by a shot.

"I didn't play as well as yesterday," Lilly said.

"Made five birdies and one bogey; I didn't putt as well today."

Lilly shot 65 on Tuesday during opening-round play at Buffalo Hill Golf Club. That gave him a two-shot edge on Morberg.

Morberg turned in the low round on the second day, carding a 5-under 65.

"He's a very good player, very steady," Morberg said of Lilly.

"He's the one to beat, no question about it. I knew that coming in."

Ron Ramsey of Bigfork, 72-70-142, is tied for third place, nine shots off the pace. Dave Cottington of Polson is fifth, 72-71-143.

Lilly is competing in his first senior tournament while Morberg is a two-time champof this event.

"Just a little bit in front (now)," said Lilly of his one-stroke advantage.

"The margin got thinner (today).

"I hung in there and didn't make any bad mistakes," Lilly continued.

"Just two putted a lot."

Lilly says his game is as sharp as ever.

"My best summer of golf," he said.

"Even though I'm getting older, older and older."

Two weeks ago at Big Mountain Golf Club, Lilly shot 62, his lowest career round.

Lilly and Morberg were not paired in the same foursome on the second day at Village Greens.

Morberg started off his round with a par on the 16th hole, followed with another par and then went birdie-birdie.

"I think I had seven birdies on the day," Morberg said.

"Three putted one time. Other than that, I was looking at birdies all day."

Morberg said he was expecting Lilly to shoot 62 or 63 at Village Greens.

"I knew my 65 was a decent round, but I thought I would lose a stroke or two (to Lilly)," he said.

"I'm still not real happy with my game. I'm starting to drive it better, my irons are pretty good, I'm putting decent. You never want to say you're putting good as it will come back to bite you."

Morberg and Lilly will finish tournament play today at Buffalo Hill on the Championship 18. They tee off at 12:45 p.m. on hole No. 1 along with Ramsey and defending tournament champ Tom Gai of Billings, 73-69-142.

The other final group to tee off will be Cottington, Ed Miller of Billings, John Ashcraft of Polson and John Dayries of Missoula.

Ashcraft made the most tournament noise on Day 2 by acing the 150-yard fourth hole at Village Greens. Ashcraft was golfing with Pat Coyle of Missoula, Les Mahon of Colstrip and Bill Meagor of Butte.

All golfers play Buffalo Hill twice and Village Greens once in the 54-hole event.

"Just play the course," Morberg said of his final day strategy.

"If I play the course the way I can play it, not trying to beat anyone, (things will fall in place)."

In the women's portion of the tournament, Kris Jupka of Great Falls followed her opening-day 90 with an 88 Wednesday for a 178 total and four-shot victory.

Shelley Hopfauf of Glasgow, 91-91-182, was second and Christy Egbert of Belgrade third, 103-85-188.

All 36-holes in the women's tournament were played at Village Greens.
