GREAT FALLS - The high school sports season is under way.

Golfers from Glacier, Flathead and Whitefish high schools survived a windy start Monday at Meadow Lark Country Club.

"The wind was blowing 40-50 miles per hour all day," said Glacier coach Rob Logsdon.

"It was tough."

Still, three Glacier golfers broke 80 with Justin Newton leading the way for the Wolfpack with a 76 at the Great Falls Invitational.

"He played very, very well," Logsdon said.

Larry Iverson III and Grahm Schmaltz both shot 77.

"Larry got off to a poor start (with bogeys on the first two holes)," Logsdon said.

"He finished with a three putt on the final hole (for another bogey)."

Schmaltz had a double bogey on the final hole.

Glacier leads the boys' standings with a 313 total. Billings West is second, 320, and Whitefish third, 323.

Sam Krause and Ryan Zalecky led Whitefish, both shooting 77.

Josh Hedge of West had the best round, 74.

Rounding out Glacier's scoring were Tyson Howe with an 83 and Trey Griffith shot 99.

Karli Aurich led the way for the Glacier girls, shooting 91.

Taran Brown was next at 93.

"Her (Brown) best score ever," Logsdon said.

"She was pretty excited, happy."

Martha Obermiller shot 112, Elsie Satterfield 114 and Justine Klein 123.

"I was really happy for the kids," Logsdon said.

"For the first tournament with that kind of wind, I thought they did really well."

Flathead's numbers were a little higher.

Michael Reavis paced the boys with an 81. Jaden Treece and Ben Piersall both shot 87, Andrew Olson 94 and Scoop Decker 104.

"Pretty solid," Flathead coach Kim Elliott said for Reavis.

"Ben and Jaden, we expect them to come down tomorrow. It was just a tough deal for them today."

Betsy Engle led the FHS girls with a 101. Beth McNutt shot 106, Sarah Cunningham 114 and Michelle Tanberg 118. The Bravettes had just four girls playing.

"We expect Betsy to be under 100," Elliott said.

"She had a bad last hole or she would have made her goal."

Bozeman leads the girls' standings, 350, with West second, 357, CMR third, 360, and Whitefish fourth, 366.

Chelsea Ray led WHS with an 87.

Morgan Lee of Great Falls High leads with an 82.

The tournament winds up today with the final 18 holes at Eagle Falls Golf Club.
