Wolfpack boys, Iverson bring home Helena Invite title

The Daily Inter Lake

HELENA - That didn't take long.

Glacier High School, which hasn't even started classes yet, won its first team sporting events Tuesday.

Junior Larry Iverson III won his second straight golf tournament and the rest of Wolfpack boys team scored a two-day total of 586 to beat Bozeman by 32 strokes in the Helena Golf Invitational.

The Glacier soccer teams also won, sweeping Big Sky. (See Page B4 for details).

Tuesday was extra special for GHS golf coach Rob Logsdon, who led the 1987 Helena Capital football team to the state championship as its quarterback as well as winning a state golf title.

"That was my hometown tournament, so I'm pretty jacked," Logsdon said. "But this was huge for the kids at Glacier."

Iverson carded a 68-68-136 at the Green Meadow Country Club to win by eight strokes over Capital's Ben Ternes.

"Larry just keeps getting better," Logsdon said. "The boys are pumped. We set a goal of having all five guys under 80 on both days, and we almost made it."

Sophomores Justin Newton and Grahm Schmaltz finished at 149, freshman Trey Griffith had a 155 and sophomore Aaron Young carded a 157.

The Glacier girls placed third with a two-day 773. Bozeman (680) and Great Falls C.M. Russell (741) took the top two spots.

Sophomore Carly Aurich shot an 86-95-181 and finished seventh overall to lead the Glacier girls.

"We had a goal to try and get all five girls under 100 on both days and we're getting there," Logsdon said.

The Wolfpack are back in action on Sept. 6 with their own Glacier Golf Triangular against Flathead and Whitefish.

Polson sweeps C-Falls triangular

COLUMBIA FALLS - Polson's Tyler Engebretson and Joe Andrews tied for medalist honors Tuesday at the Columbia Falls Triangular Golf Meet at Meadow Lake Golf Course to lead the Pirates to team victory.

Polson beat Bigfork by 29 strokes while two Columbia Falls teams were 46 and 71 strokes back.

Engebretson and Andrews each carded an 11-over 83.

"Meadow Lake is probably the toughest course in the area that high school kids play on so that's why the scores are a little higher than we're used to," Columbia Falls coach Gene Marcille said.

Polson had the only girls team to have enough golfers to qualify for a team score. The Pirates' Natalia Arlint medaled at 22-over 94.
