Glacier girls third at invite
CMR tops field at swim meet
Allison Grubb was satisfied, but a little disappointed with Saturday's Flathead Invitational swim meet at The Summit.
Grubb posted a personal best time in the 100-yard freestyle (1:00.69), good for sixth place, and finished third in the 50 freestyle (27.81).
"That was pretty impressive, considering I'm so tired after training pretty hard," she said of her 100 freestyle time. "I took one second off."
The day's downer for the Flathead High School senior was not being able to compete in the relays - her favorite events. With just two girls on the Flathead roster for the season opener, those events were out of the question.
"We don't have enough girls out for relays," she said. "That's why the high school split was so hard on us."
While Flathead didn't compete in the relays, Glacier had enough boys and girls to do so.
Saturday also marked the first time Flathead and Glacier competed as separate schools.
"I miss having relays," Grubb said. "That's always the most intense part of the meet. But my goal today was to focus on one thing in every race and to forget about the whole relay thing."
The Flathead boys were also short of personnel and did not field relay teams for the meet. That hurt both squads in the team standings.
The Flathead girls finished last with 45 points, while C.M. Russell topped the field with a 309.5 point total. Missoula Sentinel (222) was second, and Glacier (151.5) edged Missoula Big Sky/Loyola for third place by 1.5 points.
CMR also won the boys' team title with a 212 score. Great Falls High was second, 205.
Glacier, led by double winner Phil Rempe, came in fifth, 121. Flathead was seventh, 43, in the eight-team field.
The Wolfpack had one more first as the girls won the 200 freestyle relay with a quick time of 1:51.41. The winning foursome of Sammie Hammett, Quin Stevens, Kelsey Iblings and Claire Morison finished nine seconds ahead of the second place Great Falls High team.
Glacier also took third in the girls' 200 medley relay.
The Glacier boys were fourth in the 200 medley relay.
Rempe had an outstanding day with top times in the 100 individual medley (58.75) and 100 freestyle (51.13).
Ashley Judd had a strong outing for FHS, placing second in the 50 breaststroke (34.44) and fourth in the 200 freestyle (2:11.47).
Grubb has been a member of the Bravettes since her freshman season. The former cross country runner got involved in swimming by joining her running teammates, who also swam.
"I started burning out at a young age," she said of running.
Then she tore a quad muscle late in her freshman season. That's also the last time she ran.
"I just fell in love with it," she said of swimming.
"(Coach) Paul Stelter told me: 'You have a natural feel for the water,' and that I could really excel in swimming. I said, 'Great, I can do something else.'"
Stelter, who is coaching both Flathead and Glacier this season, said Grubb "had the best 100 she's ever had.
"She swam great."
Stelter was pleased with the overall performance by swimmers at both schools.
"I was very surprised, pleasantly surprised, we swam as well as we did," he said. "We've been working a lot on stroke mechanics. We haven't really been training tough yet. I am sure we will see things amping up this week."
Glacier and Flathead are back in the water on Saturday at the Havre Invitational.
