Braves dominate Day 1 of duals

BUTTE - Call it a statement day by Flathead's wrestlers.

The Braves had three outings at the Mining City Duals on Friday and they produced crushing results each time out.

In order, they were …

 Flathead 81, Hardin 0

 Flathead 72, Billings Senior 6

 Flathead 87, Anaconda 0

For those who are wondering, a perfect score in a dual match is 90-0.

"We lost just two matches (on the day) and we were in both of them," FHS coach Jeff Thompson said of the six points Senior scored.

"We came in with high expectations and goals. Our first day, we stuck to our game plan."

And that was …

"To make a statement," Thompson said.

"Not to just win duals, but to dominate duals."

And that they did.

The highlight match versus Anaconda was at 152 pounds where Flathead's Tyler Wells, a state runner-up a year ago, pinned Marcus Lucey, a state champ. Wells led that match by 12 points before sticking Lucey.

Bryce Stacy, a state champ last year for FHS, won all three of his matches by pins. It was his first action of the season. He has been sidelined with an ankle injury.

And the list for Flathead's successful start went on and on.

"We just have keep proving it tomorrow (today)," Thompson said.

"Our wrestlers should never be satisfied. Tomorrow will separate the men from the boys."

Flathead is looking to win this event for the first time. The Braves have been the runners-up numerous times.

"Overall, we really improved our conditioning from last week," Thompson said.

"We wrestled well in the third period. We broke a lot of our opponents (in the third period), got a lot of pins."

Also competing in the two-day event are Glacier, Columbia Falls, Polson and Whitefish.

Glacier got off to a tough start as C.M. Russell rolled to a 71-12 victory. But the Wolfpack rebounded by defeating Dillon 44-33 and Huntley-Project 46-42.

Glacier trailed Huntley-Project 24-0 before storming back.

"It was a great way to finish," Glacier coach Mark Fischer said.

Boyce Ballard sparked the Wolfpack to the win over Huntley-Project. The 189-pounder was trailing 5-0.

"He lifted the kid right up off the mat and took him right to his back (for a pin)," Fischer said.

"That revved everybody up."

The also put the Wolfpack on the scoreboard for the first time in that dual. Glacier only lost two matches after that in their final dual of the day.
