Braves dig up title in Mining City

Flathead goes 7-0 in dual tournament, defeats Havre 46-23 in championship match

BUTTE - It was a long time coming for the Flathead wrestling team.

The Braves won the Mining City Duals for the first time in school history on Saturday night.

Flathead downed defending champion Havre 46-23 in the championship dual.

"We did it. We finally got the monkey off our back," said Flathead head coach Jeff Thompson.

"There was a lot of hugging. You don't see that often in wrestling," he laughed.

"As a team, this was one of our goals this year. This would be parallel with winning state. It was absolutely huge to this team, this coaching staff," he said.

"Havre is such a good team. They're so well-coached. This is a great stepping stone for the rest of our season," he added.

Flathead and Havre were on a collision course all weekend.

The Braves downed Colstrip (68-13), Helena Capital (77-3) and Great Falls High (55-21) earlier in the day while Havre defeated Glacier (72-9), Conrad (65-9), and CMR (58-20).

The championship dual started at the 215-pound weight class.

Justin Waverek got the momentum rolling in Flathead's direction right away.

Trailing Havre's Paul Jensen by four points late in the second period, Waverek threw Jensen on his back and pinned him.

The Braves followed that up with a 3-1 Tyler Thomas decision at heavyweight and a Caleb Piasecki pin at 98 pounds.

Thomas' heavyweight decision may have been the most exciting win of the dual. The match was tied 1-1 with time running out - but Thomas scored a takedown with two seconds on the clock.

"He just started wrestling last year. He's improved so much. We're very proud of him," Thompson said of the Flathead heavyweight.

The big wins continued with three straight Flathead decisions from 135 to 145 - and at 152, Tyler Wells pinned Blue Pony Ethan

Hinebaugh in 1:25.

"We wrestled a perfect dual. Even the kids that lost wrestled their hearts out. We are very proud of all the wrestlers we brought with us. It was a total team effort," Thompson said.

Several Braves - Wells, Brian Ham, T.C. Decker, Bryce Stacy, Ryan Thiel, Piasecki, Shawn Lau, Ryan Swelland and Luke Fischer - cruised through the entire weekend without a loss.

Shawn Lau and Fischer have yet to lose this season and Lau has pinned all but one opponent.

Great Falls High went on to defeat CMR 40-39 to capture third place overall.

Another coach pleased with how his team came through the weekend was Glacier High's Mark Fischer.

The Wolfpack finished 3-3.

"We won more duals in this tournament than we thought we would all season. The kids are coming on, they are getting addicted to wrestling," Fischer said.

On Saturday, Glacier lost to Havre, but bounced back to beat Conrad (45-40) and tied Bozeman at 39. Bozeman won that dual based on tiebreaker criteria.

The Wolfpack trailed Conrad 34-33, but pins by Jordan Nelson at 130 and Lucas Cummings at 135 put the Wolfpack up 45-34 going into the final match.

The Wolfpack was also down 24-9 at one point to Bozeman.

Freshman Stormy Day had a phenomenal weekend - he finished 5-0 with wins over some tough opponents.

The huge tournaments continue for Flathead. The Braves head to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, next weekend for the Tri-State Tournament, then go to Gillette, Wyo. Dec. 21-22 for the Pat Weed Invitational.
