Braves romp in Missoula, 176-0

MISSOULA - Whoa. Check out these mind-boggling wrestling scores: 89-0 and 87-0.

The Flathead High School wrestling team slapped those results on Missoula Hellgate and Missoula Big Sky, respectively, on Wednesday.

"Those might be the best scores in a single day for me coaching," Flathead coach Jeff Thompson said.

The best dual score possible is 90-0.

With the victories, the Braves moved to 10-0 on the season. But more importantly in these duals, they got a lot of experience in.

"We got a lot of JV guys in on these duals," Thompson said. "And we brought a lot of guys up in weight. It was a great tuneup for the Gillette meet this weekend."

The wrestler who made the biggest splash on the day was 130-pound freshman Alejandro Calderon, who moved up to varsity for the first time. He finished with two pins.

"Those were two pins against two pretty tough opponents," Thompson said. "He proved himself today and won a 30-hour bus ride this weekend. We're taking him to Gillette."

Five Braves got pins in less than a minute: Tyler Thomas, Ryan Swelland, Jerimiah Gaiser, Calderon and Luke Fischer. At 112 pounds, Swelland had the quickest at 14 seconds. Fischer, at 189, got his in 20 seconds. Heavyweight Thomas got his in 29 seconds.

The Braves are off to Gillette, Wyo., for a huge dual meet this weekend. They will compete in seven duals in two days against some of the best competition in the Northwest.
