Braves finish with 6 seeding tourney champs, qualify 28 for state

BUTTE - The magic number for the Flathead High School wrestling team at the Western AA seeding tournament was 30.
That's how many wrestlers the Braves were hoping to qualify for state.
Well …
They came close.
Awfully close.
Flathead will send 28 individuals to the AA state tournament, which begins Friday in Billings.
"We had 14 kids in the finals," said Flathead coach Jeff Thompson.
"Basically, it was a dual of Western AA teams against Flathead. It was pretty impressive."
No team totals are kept at this event, which began Friday.
The Braves finished with six champions - Shawn Lau at 98, Austin Zapata, 130, TC Decker, 135, Bryce Stacey, 145, David Lau, 160, and Luke Fischer, 171 - on Saturday.
Zapata, a senior, also won a seeding title as a sophomore.
Flathead heavyweight Dan Ogden, who has missed much of the season following surgery to repair a football injury, finished second.
"He had (Trever Hass) on his back at the end of the second period," said Thompson.
"He would have gotten a fall, but time ran out."
Hass, of Butte, won by decision, 12-8.
"Those two are so even," Thompson said.
"He's (Ogden's) improving so fast; he just got on the mats three weeks ago. He will get him at state where it counts."
Thompson said Caleb Allen-Schmid, a junior varsity wrestler all season, had a super tournament.
"A freshman at 140 pounds, he absolutely wrestled the best tournament of his life," Thompson said.
"He beat the No. 3 ranked guy (Brian Moree of Big Sky) in the state."
That was in the semifinals by an 8-7 decision.
Allen-Schmid then fell in the finals.
Also placing second for FHS were: Dan Jenkins, 105, Tanner Beaman, 112, Brian Ham, 119, Ricky Janes, 125, Tyler Wells, 152, and Drew Watkins, 189.
Flathead had seven wrestlers battling for third and fourth place honors, five in for fifth and sixth and two in for seventh and eighth.
Flathead had 30 wrestlers competing at the tournament.
"We like our chances for state," Thompson said.
"We wrestled a little flat the first day, a little jet lag, but today they wrestled with so much excitement. They were aggressive. They wanted to make a statement."
