Lowell Thomas 'Tom' Haines, 75
Lowell Thomas "Tom" Haines, 75, of Columbia Falls, formerly of Woodbine, Md., died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007, at Carroll Hospice Dove House in Westminster, Md.
Born on March 7, 1931, in Woodbine, he was the son of the late Raymond and Helen Grimes Haines. He was the husband of Sylvia V. Canon Haines, his wife of six years.
He retired in 1988 as the director of the Carroll County Department of Social Services. He graduated from Western Maryland College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history. He received his master's of social work from the University of Pennsylvania. He was an LCSW (licensed certified social worker).
He was on the founding board of directors for Human Services Programs of Carroll County Inc., and for Carroll County Food Sunday. He was instrumental in initiating the service units of the Salvation Army of Carroll County, Shepherd's Staff, and the Human Relations Commission. He was a strong advocate for low-income and disadvantaged people. His work was devoted to the families of Baltimore City, Baltimore County, and Carroll County.
From the age of 4, he was an avid hunter and fisherman his entire life. He enjoyed his hobby on every continent on Earth. He obtained many world-record trophies. He supported conservation and the National Park System. He visited every national park in the United States. He enjoyed feeding "his" flock of wild turkeys and herd of deer.
Surviving in addition to his wife are stepdaughter, Laura Black, and son-in-law, Geoff Black, of Littlestown, Pa.; stepson, Thomas Canon II, of Westminster, Md.; six stepgrandchildren, Michael, Will, Jennifer, Nikki, Hannah and Thomas III; niece, Helen Haddad, of California; two cousins, Bucky and Elizabeth; and numerous lifelong devoted friends whom he loved as family.
He was pre-deceased by his former wife of 47 years, Delores Rae Haines; and his sister, Jewell Makolin.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Pritts Funeral Home and Chapel, 412 Washington Road, in Westminster, with the Rev. Barbara Sears, chaplain for Carroll Hospice, officiating. Interment will be in Morgan Chapel Cemetery in Woodbine.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
