Polson, Libby Chasing Havre

BILLINGS - Nothing left on the mat.

That's what Polson Pirate Bryce Picard, the defending Class A state champion at 189 pounds, is finding out at this weekend's All-Class State A wrestling tournament at MetraPark.

Picard, wrestling at 171 pounds this year, pinned Hamilton's Tanner Weigle Friday afternoon.

But Weigle gave the Polson senior a bit of run at first.

"He came out and fought hard," Picard said. "At state, everybody comes to wrestle tougher."

Weigle was right in the match, down just 2-1, in the second period.

Picard elected to give him the escape and tie the match at 2-all, just to get on his feet.

"I have confidence on my feet to take him back down," he said.

"That's what my coaches thought best - and I agreed with them."

It worked to perfection.

The takedown was quick and the pin was mercifully close behind.

That put Picard into today's semifinals and vaulted Polson a bit closer to bringing home a team trophy.

Chances are good that at least one local team will bring home some hardware.

While Havre has a strong hold on first place with 116 points, Polson and Libby are neck-and-neck for second and third with 81.5 and 80 points, respectively.

Frenchtown is fourth at 78.5 and Corvallis is fifth with 73 points.

Top-ranked Havre put seven into today's semifinals.

Polson has six - Logan Torgison (135), Billy Johnson (145), Jared Champion (152), Ted Morigeau (160), Pat Dellwo (171), and Picard.

"We're right in the chase," Picard said.

Libby has four - Steve Gary (152), Steve Bertelsen, Justin Graham (189) and Jake Graham (215).

Columbia Falls has two wrestlers in the semifinals. They are Cody Kolodejchuk at 130 and Michael Hader at 140.

Whitefish wrestler Kevin Kaltschmidt is also a semifinalist at 119.

Polson's only real disappointment on the day was freshman Brock Picard's quarterfinal loss at 152 pounds. He lost a 6-5 decision to Anaconda's Marcus Lussy.

"I felt bad for him. He got a stall call against him, which I really don't think he did," said Pirate coach Bob Owen.

"If I had it to do over, I would have had him cut (Lussy) on the whistle. Hindsight is always 20-20.

"I think Brock could have won. I'm disappointed he didn't win it, but not at his effort. That's the way things go. You win a couple you shouldn't, then you lose one. That's the nature of the beast.

"Good round," Owen said. "Great day's work. I'm happy. I'm happy with the effort."

Whitefish coach Tim Neff was also pleased with what he saw from the Bulldogs.

Kaltschmidt got a pin in the first round, then picked up an 8-2 decision in the quarterfinals.

"We have a rematch in the semis," Neff said.

Kaltschmidt will take on Dustin Hanson of Anaconda. He lost a 6-3 decision to Hanson at the Rocky Mountain Classic a few weeks ago.

"We're going to try to get that turned around," Neff said.

"(Hanson) is a very strong wrestler, but we feel we're in better condition. We're going to compete.

"We've had a couple of pleasant surprises," Neff said.

Cody Morris got a second round win. He was trailing 8-3 with 15 seconds left in his match, when he got an escape and a five-point throw to win 9-8.

Jake Scheel was also down 4-1 in the second round. He got an escape and a takedown.

"We went from a 4-1 deficit to tied 4-4," the coach said. The next thing anyone knew, Scheel had the pin.

"Our kids are competing." Neff said.

"We're young and we're inexperienced, but we're competing."
