Polson finishes third in Class A

BILLINGS - A Class A state team wrestling trophy is headed to western Montana today.

It's in the possession of the Polson Pirates.

Havre scored 239 points to run away with first place in Class A. Frenchtown was second at 157.5 and Polson scored 147.5. Corvallis was fourth with 125, Libby was fifth at 114 and Ronan scored 112 to finish sixth.

Columbia Falls finished 12th with 81 points, Whitefish was 19th with 18 points and Eureka was 23rd with four points.

Individual Class A state titles went to Polson's Logan Torgison (135), Ted Morigeau (160) and Bryce Picard (171). Jake Graham of Libby claimed the 215-pound title and Columbia Falls' Michael Hader won at 140.

Other state placers were Columbia Falls' Cody Kolodejchuk, second at 130, Polson's Billy Johnson, second at 145, Whitefish's Kevin Kaltschmidt, fourth at 119, Libby's Matt Roberts, fifth at 140, Polson's Jared Champion, fifth at 152, Libby's Steve Bertelsen, second at 160, Polson's Pat Dellwo, sixth at 171, and Libby's Justin Graham, sixth at 189.

"I'm happy we can bring some hardware home," said Pirate coach Bob Owen.

"I'm really happy about that."

Polson's last trophy was two years ago. The Pirates were third then as well.

It was Picard's second-straight trophy and the first for both Torgison and Morigeau.

Both placed second last year - Torgison at 125 and Morigeau at 152.

Owen admitted to being worried about Morigeau before his championship against Bertelsen.

"It's really hard to beat a kid that good three teams," he said.

And as for Torgison, he presented a worry in every match he wrestled Saturday except the championship.

"He has a tendency to ice up," Owen said.

"We made him try pulling the trigger on his offense.

"He had his 'A' game tonight," he said.

"I really wasn't wrestling very well," the junior agreed. "I had close matches to get (to the finals).

"I just tried to stay focused.

"My coaches worked with me before the match, they talked about offense and they told me to start my offense instead of waiting for things to happen."

As for Columbia Falls' Hader, he now enjoys a bond he'll always have with Columbia Falls head coach Jesse Schaeffer. The junior, a state runner-up two years ago and a fourth-place finisher last year, is Schaeffer's first state champion.

He decisioned Hamilton's Alex Martin, 6-3.

"He was strong. He was really strong," the junior said.

"I took him down right off the bat in a single."

Martin managed an escape, then chose to start the second period on the bottom. He got a second escape, but Hader got a reversal in the third period and finished the match off easily.

Hader said confidence and a ton of freestyle wrestling was the key to his successful season.

Expectations got to him last year, he said.

"There was a lot of pressure. I was expected to win and I let it get to me," he said.

"I felt really confident coming in," he said.
