Streit, West lead FHS swim swimmers

Both win individual events, on winning relays in outing with Missoula schools at The Summit

Taylor Streit won the 100 breaststroke (1:06.73) and swam on a winning relay team to lead the Flathead boys Saturday at The Summit in a non-scoring meet with Missoula's Big Sky, Hellgate and Sentinel high schools.

Streit was also a member of the 200 freestyle relay team, along with Bryce Fischer, Andrew Unterreiner and Logan Hunter, who posted a winning time of 1:39.79.

Kaci West was the lone individual winner for the FHS girls, turning in the top time in the 100 freestyle (1:01.01). She also swam on the Bravettes' 200 medley relay, which won with a time of 2:03.28. Other relay members were Kelsey Iblings, Sammie Hammett and Allison Grubb.

This was the first meet of 2007 for the four schools. Flathead's last competition before the holiday break was Dec. 16 in Great Falls.

"Flathead swimmers are swimming very tired coming off Christmas practices," said FHS coach Paul Stelter.

"I saw good team support and great efforts. We are doing the little things more correctly. I like what I saw."

Hammett, 200 individual medley; Iblings, 100 breaststroke; Ashley Lund, 100 freestyle; Seth Bumgarner, 200 individual medley; and Kyle Brady, 100 freestyle; all placed second for Flathead.

"This team always puts forth a great effort, swimming aggressively," said Stelter.

"And now I am seeing more discipline in utilizing the skills we learn in practice."

Flathead has two regular-season meets left before state. The Braves and Bravettes are at the Missoula Invitational on Jan. 20 followed by the Helena Invitational on Jan. 27.

The state meet is Feb. 9-10 in Great Falls.
