The Flathead County commissioners approved an interim zoning district south of Somers on Thursday.

The Old Highway 93 Zoning District covers 111 acres along the east side of the highway, between the Somers Fish Hatchery and Mackinaws Grill.

Residents in the area asked for the zoning in part because a number of high-density condominium projects recently have been proposed in the area.

Thursday's action imposes R-2 residential zoning on the district, which allows single-family housing. The minimum lot size is 20,000 square feet, or about a half-acre.

The emergency zoning can be in place for a year at most. After the county adopts a new growth policy, it will likely be replaced by permanent zoning.

More than 80 percent of the property owners in the district supported the zoning proposal.
