Morris captures 1D Open crown in barrel racing

On New Year's Day, 135 barrel racers from across the state competed for $6,921.98 in prizes at Triple W Equipment's Runnin' In The New Year at Majestic Valley Arena.

In the biggest barrel race in the arena's history, local racer Kelsey Morris was the 1D Open winner with a fast time of 18.051 seconds on her new horse Reflection. Morris pocketed $401.76 for her performance.

Other open race winners were Arlee's Ty Steele (2D), Columbia Falls' Kassi Albertoni (3D) and Missoula's Peggy Goodsell (4D).

The race was a sanctioned BRN4D event.

Victor's Taylor Ruark and Helena's Lindsay Knaff split fastest youth 1D honors with identical times of 18.157 seconds.

Other youth winners were Polson's Makia Houle (2D), Missoula's Shari Ostbye (3D) and Arlee's Callie Outopallick (4D)
