Class AA state speech-debate tourney begins at 2 p.m. in Kalispell

The Flathead High School speech and debate team is defending its state title on its home turf this weekend.

Flathead is hosting the AA state speech and debate tournament today and Saturday.

More than 500 students from all 13 AA schools are scheduled to compete.

Flathead has been the state champion for the past four years and has won the title eight times in the past nine years.

Bozeman is Flathead's main threat. Last year, the Braves defeated their rival by a mere 18.5 points.

"In order to beat Bozeman, we need a full-out effort and blitz from every roster slot," coach Greg Adkins said.

Flathead's squad, which topped 200 members this year, is now down to the state-mandated 42 competitors for the state tournament.

Adkins said several Flathead students are in the running for individual titles.

Registration takes place from 11 a.m. to noon today. Round One is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.

The tournament will conclude with the awards assembly, scheduled at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the Flathead High School auditorium.
