A dozen restaurants get perfect scores

Twelve establishments tallied perfect scores during Flathead City-County Health Department food-service inspections conducted in May.

Overall, 41 of 85 businesses scored 90 or higher on a scale of 100. Nineteen places scored below 80. A few establishments scoring less than 80 made improvements to later score above 90 in the same month.

Establishments posting perfect scores were Re-Bar Saloon & Casino in Bigfork, Three Alarm BBQ in Columbia Falls, Hu Hot Mongolian Grill in Kalispell, Mountain Mudd Expresso in Kalispell, Northern Pines Deli in Kalispell, Spike's in Kalispell, Spruce Park Campground in Kalispell, Briggs Mercantile and Country Coffee in Olney, Ganache in Whitefish, and both Norskstar Seafood operations in Whitefish.

The state recently installed new regulations concerning backflow prevention, which deducted five points from the scores of numerous establishments.

The 19 establishments posting scores below 80 in April were:

. Northern Pines Deli, 77 - Improper personal food storage; no well-water sample results; improper chemical storage. A follow-up inspection posted a score of 100.

. Montana Coffee Traders, 66. Food temperature controls violation. Inadequate hand washing. Eating or drinking in kitchen. Inadequate backflow prevention. Outer openings unprotected. A follow-up inspection scored 89.

. Kum & Go No. 896, 78. Food temperature controls violation. Inadequate backflow prevention. Improper chemical storage.

. Blue Moon, 61. Outdated food. Using dented cans. Food temperature control violation. Inadequate cooling equipment, hand washing, backflow prevention. Improper chemical storage; follow-up inspection posted a score of 62.

. Little Caesar's Pizza, 79. Food temperature controls violation. Eating or drinking in kitchen. Inadequate chemical labeling; follow-up inspection scored 90.

. Papa Murphy's Pizza, 77. Food temperature controls violation. Eating or drinking in kitchen. Inadequate backflow prevention. Improper chemical storage. Inadequate chemical labeling. A follow-up inspection posted a score of 93.

. Perfect Cup Espresso, 79. Food temperature controls violation. Improper dish washing or sanitizing. Inadequate backflow prevention.

. Hilltop Hitching Post, 74. Using dented cans. Food temperature controls violation. Inadequate hot-hold equipment.

. Fatt Boys, 75. Eating or drinking in kitchen. Inadequate backflow prevention. Outer openings unprotected. This was a follow-up inspection for a 61 scored in April.

. Kelly Rae's, 69. Food temperature controls violation. Inadequate backflow protection. Outer openings unprotected. This was a follow-up to inspection for an April score of 69.

. Los Caporales on Montana 35, 69. Food temperature controls violation. Inadequate cooling equipment. Eating or drinking in kitchen. Outer openings unprotected. This was a follow-up inspection for an April score of 69.

. Bulldog Steakhouse, 59. Food temperature controls violation. Inadequate hand washing. Eating or drinking in kitchen. Inadequate backflow prevention. Inaccessible or missing hand sink. Inadequate chemical labeling. A follow-up inspection posted a score of 61. A June 5 inspection posted a 63.

. Janelli's Deli, 74. Food temperature controls violation. Improper dish washing or sanitizing. Inadequate backflow prevention. This was a follow-up inspection to an April score of 59.

. Genki, 75. Food temperature controls violation. Inadequate hand washing. Improper dish washing or sanitizing. Inadequate backflow prevention. This was a follow-up to an April score of 66.

. Greenwood Village Assisted Living, 78. Unapproved food source. Food temperature controls violation. Inadequate backflow prevention.

. Eagles Club No. 234, 79. Food temperature controls violation. Inadequate backflow prevention. Improper chemical storage.

. Perkins, 79. Food temperature controls violation. Inadequate hand washing. Eating or drinking in kitchen. Outer openings unprotected.

. Orange Julius, 78. Food temperature controls violation. Inadequate hand washing. Inadequate backflow prevention. Improper chemical storage.

Establishments scoring 90 to 98 in May were Grill at Eagle Bend, Grizzly Jack's, Halfway House Snack Shack, Vinnyhanna's Sushi, Porteus BBQ, Tien's Palace Oriental Dining, Anna's Greek Gyros, Cafe Espresso, Capers, DG Barleys, Espress Way, Heritage Place and JMY Concessions.

Other places in the 90-to-98 range were Little Caesar's, Lucky Lil's Casino, Lucky Loggers Casino, McDonald's of Evergreen, Midori, North Bay Bar, Papa Murphy's, Players Club Casino, Shichuan BBQ, Summit Preparatory School, Hill Top Quick Stop, Marion Fire Department, Pleasant Valley Aparies, Point of Rocks, Stillwater Bar, and Mackinaw's Grill.
