A 14-year-old Somers boy died Tuesday after he was struck by a car driven by an off-duty Montana highway patrolman.

The boy was attempting to cross U.S. 93 at the intersection of Montana 82 on his bicycle at about 12:15 p.m. when the car, traveling south on U.S. 93, hit him.

He was transported to Kalispell Regional Medical Center where he died later Tuesday afternoon.

The boy's name is being withheld pending family notification.

Alcohol and excessive speed were not a factor, authorities said.

Because the incident involved a highway patrolman, the Kalispell Police Department and Flathead County Attorney's Office are assisting in the investigation.

Further details were not available Tuesday night because the investigation is ongoing.
