Glacier, Kalispell, Kootenai Valley fall into losers' bracket

POLSON - The Libby and Mission Valley American Legion baseball teams advanced to the second round of the Western A District Tournament on Saturday.

Libby beat Missoula, 9-5, and Mission Valley beat Kootenai Valley, 13-3. The Loggers and Mariners face off against each other today at 6 p.m. for a berth into the undefeated semifinals.

Complete statistics were not reported.

Both Bitterroot teams beat the Flathead Valley teams in the first round.

Kalispell was upset by No. 4 seed, the Bitterroot Red Sox, 9-6. The Bitterroot Bucs beat Glacier, 16-0.

Libby 13, Missoula 6

Libby banged out nine extra base hits, led by Kelly Brumbaugh's home run in the fifth inning to left field with one runner on, as the Loggers rolled in their district tournament opener.

Brumbaugh's shot put Libby up 11-1.

"We got on the stick early and often," Libby coach Kelly Morford said.

"We played good defense to back it up."

Brumbaugh added two doubles and finished the day going 3-for-4. Steve Bertelsen, 3-for-5, also had two doubles.

Zach Rowan and Rory Hendrickson had three hits each for the Loggers.

Sam Sopko hit a grand slam home run for Missoula in the sixth inning.

Libby out-hit Missoula, 18-9.
