Glacier National Park plow crews are chipping away at the Big Drift on Going-to-the-Sun Road, and cleanup work continues west of Logan Pass.

The Big Drift is the biggest obstacle in annual snow clearing operations. This year the drift is estimated at more than 70 feet deep.

Melissa Wilson, the park's public affairs officer, said plowing crews expect to continue work on the drift into next week.

"And there is still significant work that needs to be done after that before there can be a west-side opening," Wilson said. "There is no projection yet [for an opening] and it's not something that is imminent."

Plows must clear the parking lot at the Logan Pass Visitor Center, signs and guardrails have to be installed, and debris cleanup on Sun Road will continue.

East of Logan Pass, meanwhile, a contractor is continuing repairs on a series of road sections that were severely damaged by heavy runoff from a severe rainstorm last fall.
