Gilbert E. Smith, 80

Gilbert Smith, 80, died peacefully in the Kalispell Regional Hospital of an extended illness on June 25, 2007.

He was born Oct. 4, 1926, in Livingston, and grew up on a farm out of Clyde Park. He graduated from Livingston High School in 1944.

He enlisted in the Navy for three years and then returned to Bozeman to attend college. Gilbert was appointed by Mike Mansfield to attend Annapolis where he graduated in 1952.

Gilbert served in the Navy for more than 20 years, traveling abroad to many different countries. He retired as a lieutenant commander.

In 1962, Gilbert married Winona Freitag. He and his wife moved from California to Whitefish where they have enjoyed the past 17 years.

Gilbert Smith was a member of the United Church of God. Ordained as a deacon in 1987, he set a sterling example of unselfish service, courageous faith, and quiet generosity.

Gil's love for the truth and ability to encourage others continued right up to the end. Like the Apostle Paul, Gil could say, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing." - 2 Timothy 4:7-8

He was preceded in death by parents Roscow and Edna.

Gilbert is survived by his wife of 45 years, Winona; brother, Gordon Smith; sister, Aileen Ward; stepdaughter, Karen Marasco; and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service and burial took place at Woodlawn Cemetery.
