Polson, Libby, C. Falls leave Butte tourney with 8 softball wins

BUTTE - The Polson and Libby high school softball teams finished Butte Central's LaVerne Combo Invitational strong with two victories Saturday.

Polson beat Thompson Falls, 10-3, and then defending state champ Laurel, 10-2.

Libby beat Glendive, 10-3, and then Class B power Florence, 6-1.

The Pirates and Loggers both finished the tourney with 3-1 records. Polson lost to Hamilton and Libby lost to Laurel on Friday.

The Columbia Falls Wildkats beat Laurel on Saturday and finished the tourney with a 2-2 record.

Both Eureka and Whitefish dropped two games Saturday and went 0-for-4 in tourney.

The 30-team tournament, which gets its name from a longtime Butte Central secretary, does not declare a champion.

Polson 10, Thompson Falls 3

Sarah Newton pitched four no-hit innings with five strikouts and one walk, while Amanda James belted a sixth home run of the season to lead Polson.

Newton had three RBIs while Lindsey Rafter, James and NeTesha Arlint each added two.

Dylen Zetterberg struck out five and allowed just four hits while Jaelin Vandeberg hit her eighth home run of the season and Sarah Newton hit her seventh with a grand slam.

Vandeberg matched Newton with four RBIs and Zetterberg improved to 10-2 on the season.

Nickole Lapkin went 3-for-3 with a double, while Laice Dedrick went 2-for-3 to back up the strong pitching by Brooke Hageness to lead the Loggers.

Hageness allowed nine Glendive hits, but fanned 11 batters in the win.

Lauren LaBar went 2-for-3 with a triple to lead the Red Devils. Rikki Berg went 2-for-3 with a double, with Ceri Olson adding a two-bagger.
