Goose Bay gets contract for work at Glacier High

At its regular meeting Tuesday night, the Kalispell Board of Trustees awarded Goose Bay a $294,000 contract for road work at Glacier High School.

The contract includes a $284,368 base bid, which will cover widening and improving Stillwater Drive from the south end of the entrance to Wolfpack Way to the roundabout at the intersection of Stillwater and West Reserve. It also includes paving the first 300 feet of Wolfpack Way and an access to the school from West Reserve Drive. The access will be a right-out, right-in intersection; only vehicles traveling east will be allowed to turn into the school lot, and exiting vehicles may only turn east onto West Reserve.

The bid also includes a $9,746 bid alternate, which involves redoing some intersections to allow larger truck-turning radii. CTA Architects will reimburse the school district for this work.

Goose Bay has 45 days to substantially complete the job.

The district's total budget for roads and intersections around Glacier High is $350,000. This money includes street lighting and bike-path connections.

The Montana Department of Transportation recently awarded LHC a nearly $5.2 million contract to build the Reserve Loop, a 2.3-kilometer (about 1 1/2 miles), four-lane road near the north end of the U.S. 93 bypass. The loop will run north and east of Glacier High, from Stillwater Drive to U.S. 93 just south of Costco.

Phase One of the two-part contract, which includes paving and interim striping, must be completed by Aug. 20. Phase Two, which includes sidewalk work, landscaping and the final chip seal, will be completed in spring 2008.

Also at the meeting:

. The board voted to allow the district to implement all-day kindergarten, beginning in fall 2007. The district's five elementary schools will offer daylong kindergarten, but parents may choose to enroll their children for half a day.

During its special session, the Montana Legislature appropriated $10 million to help districts statewide with the startup costs associated with all-day kindergarten. No long-term funds are in place for the program.

. The board approved hiring Bryce Wilson as the new Flathead High School dean. It is a one-year position, which may be renewed annually after review.

Wilson is a Flathead graduate with a bachelor's degree in mathematics education from Montana State University and a master's degree in administration from Eastern Washington University. He has taught math in Nevada and Washington and is currently a principal and district athletic director in Reardon, Wash.

. The board approved hiring Bill Sullivan as the middle-school dean and activities director. Sullivan is currently the dean and athletics director at Kalispell Junior High School.

. The board approved hiring Darren Schlepp as principal of Edgerton Elementary. Schlepp, who has been the principal at Russell School for seven years, will replace Rebecca Dahl, who is resigning at the end of the school year and traveling to the United Arab Emirates.

. Trustees Anna Marie Bailey, Don Murray and Bill Sutton were sworn in for their new terms. Sutton was elected by acclamation to his third term on the board. Bailey and Murray were reelected May 8 to their fourth terms.

After a vote Tuesday night, Brad Walterskirchen and Eve Dixon will maintain their roles as chairman and vice chair, respectively. Todd Watkins was reappointed to the district clerk position.
