Lakers, Twins perfect at Canadian Days

Showdown today at 5:30 p.m. at Griffin Field

The table is set: The Lakers and Twins for the bragging rights of the 2007 Canadian Days Tournament at Griffin Field.

The Flathead Valley's Class AA American Legion baseball teams wrapped up day two of the tourney Saturday with a pair of victories apiece - giving them both 3-0 tournament records heading into today's 5:30 p.m. meeting against each other. While there is no righteous

championship game this year because Lethbridge had to cancel its trip earlier in the week, today's Kalispell-Glacier matchup can be deemed the chipper.

"Both teams, I'm sure, have been looking forward to this since December," Kalispell coach Ryan Malmin said. "It will be nice to finally get on the field and square up with each other."

Glacier pitcher Scott Yogodzinski opened the day by pitching a no-hitter in the Twins' 13-0 victory over Sherwood Park, which is located south of Edmonton, B.C. Then Justin Collom pitched a one-hitter against West Kootenai of Trail, B.C., in a 10-0 victory. Both of Glacier's wins were shortened to five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

"What a phenomenal day," Glacier coach Jarod Grubb said. "One hit in 10 innings. We 10-runned both opponents. Everybody was focused. It was great. We even got everybody on the team into the games."

Kalispell beat Sherwood Park, 3-1, and then Rocky Mountain of Cranbrook, B.C., 7-1.

"We were a little lethargic earlier today but tonight we came out with a little bit more energy and that was nice to see," Malmin said. "We hit the ball a lot better in the second game."

In the only Class AA game of the day involving non-Montana teams, Rocky Mountain beat West Kootenai, 11-8.

In the Class A portion of the tourney, Missoula's Senior Babe Ruth team beat Glacier, 10-0, and then Kalispell, 19-4, to post a 3-0 round-robin record. Libby beat Glacier, 4-3, and then Kalispell beat Libby, 13-5. Kalispell (1-2) ended up with the No. 2 seed by way of a tie-breaker and will play Missoula again today at 3 p.m. for the tourney championship on Griffin Field. Libby (1-2) will play Glacier (0-3) in the Nos. 3 and 4 seeded game today at 12:30 p.m. on Archie Roe Field.

Rocky Mountain 1

Zach Davis pitched a no-hitter through five innings and the Lakers' offense proved potent enough for a few of multi-run innings.

Davis struck out 10 while walking three and hitting three batters.

"He gave up six free passes," Malmin said. "I'm always going to give him grief. The six passes is a little bit of a concern but I was really happy that he spotted up pretty well and we were able to implement and utilize his change-up more. That was really good to see him throwing that across the plate for strikes. I was really happy for him for that."

Catcher Pat Hergesheimer said Davis did great.

"I didn't even realize he threw no-hit ball," he said. "He was using mostly fastballs and his curves were on, but mostly fastballs and he was fast today. He was on and hitting nice locations. He was pretty pumped up and came out firing strikes - inside, outside, down the middle, just out of the zone on 0-2, low on some. He was all over the place but in the right locations."

Davis improved to 2-0 on the season and the Lakers improved to 12-4.

The Lakers out-hit the Bandits, 11-3. Austin Zapata continued his offensive surge by going 2-for-4 with an RBI double. Adam Olson, Zac Ford and Tucker Hankinson each added two hits apiece and Tyler Reichoff had two RBIs.

Collom's only hit allowed was an infield single that Luke Stone beat out.

"(Collom) throws really well," Grubb said. "(Ryan) Caron and him were on same page and they used pitches where they should be used and crossed up hitters all up game. (Caron) was throwing ground ball outs all game."

The Twins batted around the order in the third inning and scored nine runs. Rusty Hill, who had three of the Twins' five hits, highlighted the inning with a two-run single. Scott Yogodzinski hit a triple and came all the way around to score when the throw into third base bounced off his helmet.

Hill also added an RBI single in the first inning.
